Penn Street

Although Halloween has come and gone, this is a great post, so I chose this one to share from Cyndy my guest today. The blog is all yours dear:

Since living on Penn Street in Millheim, Halloween has become one of my favorite holidays. I have always enjoyed watching our kids get dressed up and be all excited about filling their bags with candy, but it has become so much more fun since moving to Penns Valley. For me it is the sense of community and tradition that walk the street one night a year.

Since we live in a rural area, many families pack up their little monsters and bring them to "town." Many of our homes on Penn Street are no more than inches apart, so for the kids it is an easy way to hit one house after another without expending too much effort, key in getting-candy logistics. We usually have the honor of seeing a couple of hundred ghosts and goblins each year. Our own kids even make their journey down the street really quick so that they can come back to see everyone up close rather than just in passing on the sidewalks.

Since we live in the old Theatre, one of the only properties with a front lawn on this "city" block, we decorate the front yard and porch and sit on the big steps that serve as front row seats to enjoy each of the trick-or-treaters and their families. This year we had tombstones and glowing skeletal hands emerging from the dirt in the planters. We didn't have time to carve pumpkins, so we had a fire in our little patio fireplace, placing it strategically on the side lawn away from flowing vampire capes and princess veils. The kids promenade up the walk like a runway to our stairs to get their treats, and this year we supplied the tricks with a candy dish that had a skeleton hand pop out when you reached into the bowl. It startled so many kids that we had to move the dish down a couple of stairs to prevent anyone from falling when they jumped in surprise!

The piece d'resistance, though, is our popcorn. Every year we schlep the theatre's old popcorn machine out onto the porch and make scores and scores of batches of yummy popcorn. The yellow glow from the lighted top of the machine and the aroma of toasting corn and melting butter fill the air. We originally started this tradition so the parents could have a treat while walking the street, but so many of the kids also choose this salty, crunchy goodie over the candy and will patiently wait until we fill the little bags. The only disappointment is that the bag often fills their little plastic treat buckets! Mom and dad often quickly remedy the problem by offering to "hold" the popcorn, often giving a knowing smile that it won't last the rest of the trek down Penn Street!

With so many people walking around town, everyone often taking a moment to stop and talk, it often makes me think that this must be what it was like when Millheim was in its heyday. No one is rushing by in their minivan to get to soccer practice; they are instead strolling the street and taking their time to meet and greet their neighbors. I didn't see one cell phone last night. Everyone was talking face to face. The kids all take time to really enjoy their hosts. They do not just grab their candy and run, even the teenagers. All would stop and visit for a moment, letting us admire their costumes and to share their excitement. We get to see their families together, sharing a night with a leisurely stroll down an old victorian avenue where the sidewalks lead you from one friendly face to another. For us, it is one night where we can see so many kids of the Valley as they are growing up, knowing that someday they will talk about coming to the Theatre on Halloween just as their parents reminisce about the days that they, too, enjoyed this place when they were little. Howdy Doody costumes may now be replaced with Darth Vader ensembles, but the ritual lives on.

The trick is making the moment last while the treat is a family tradition.

The things we do for our Kids!!!!

OK as you may or may not know, according to whether you have been to my blog or not, is that I am really terrified of moths. Yes moths, i know it's pathetic but it's always been there and it doesn't change, I also intensely dislike butterflies and small birds and anything that flutters or appears on the cover of novels like Silence of the Lambs.
My family are all aware of the phobia, the kids are more than aware, they like to tell everyone about how hilarious it is when a moth gets into the kitchen and all hell breaks loose. One landed on Syd's forehead one time and I almost took the poor kid out with a frying pan!!!! We all stood there screaming at each other!!!! I would have won $100,000 if someone had taped it!!
So, it's early May and Ash has a birthday coming up in June, she tells me about fifteen trillion times that she wants a Butterfly Garden, she repeats the commercial verbatim and tells me if I order now I can get the caterpillars for free, order with your credit card at 1-800-suckah!!! Now I didn't exactly do that (I make it a rule never to order from the TV, used to work for a BIG BANK and saw scams every minute of every day a lot of them involving purchasing stuff from the TV). I digress. I can't remember where I saw this thing being sold but I caved when I thought about her cute little face and how excited she'd be to get her own butterfly garden. I bought it!

Happy Birthday, you're five and now you have a butterfly garden.
I opened it and found that you have to then order the caterpillars.... wonderful....another thing to prolong the inevitable....I made it about hmmm three months before I crumbled and actually ordered the damn caterpillars.
Enter new sitter, the girls were home for a
week with a new sitter for Fall Break (for those of you outside the US, they get
a week off school early October,
we don't usually go anywhere special). I called new sitter and asked her if she'd do the honors and get the things out of the box and into the
pop up hamper thing. Well she didn't have to,
they come in a little jar that sits there while they eat and then make their cocoons. It's after this stage that you have to move them, drat that means I'll have to wait a while and find
another fool I mean helper to do it.

Of course they turn into beautiful little cocoons, as the directions describe them, you then have to pin the little piece of paper they are hanging from onto the inside of the hamper thingy.....this caused much drama... you're not supposed to mess with them much or disturb them, you try pinning the thing without jiggling them, all the while you have a five year old grabbing onto you, the hamper, the cocoons and screaming with delight!!!!!
We did it, they hatched, and then they fluttered.

It was at this point my fear started to kick in, every time Ash went in there to see her "little babies" (she named them all) she would unzip the top and I had horrific visions of them flying all over her room!!! I would get butterflies just looking at her with them! Argghh.
So I managed to persuade her after a week or so to set them free, let them out into the wide world to go yonder and collect nectar and do whatever it is they do....and get the hell out of my house!!!

Actually it wasn't too bad, they were really kind of docile as far as fluttery bugs go, they would sit on the girls hands and let them hold them for a long time before they finally flew away. Yes, they flew away, far far away!!! Exhale!!!!

Now Syd wants one... I don't know if I can do it again!!!! How about a goat or a donkey or something??? at least they'd keep the grass down!!!

Thanks for reading and thanks again Jules for having me!!!

More Monkeys

I love this.
I can't even remember whose blog
I stole it off from anymore.
But, if it was you - thanks!

I have been finding new and wonderful friends out in the blog world along with keeping up with my old. I have become a horrible commentor and I apologize for this. But, I am reading - I am.

Today (Friday) I am finishing up things for my trip -
::cleaning
::prepping Halloween stuff
::final packing check
::pre-cooking some food
::cleaning out van
::getting carry on ready
::hoping to research a bit more on what to do while in Vegas

Thank you to my contributors for next week. I love the blog world and how new and old friends step up to help. Stop by and show them some love next week.

Unlike my Colorado trip, I will not be able to update regularly. Most likely I will not be able to update at all until I get back. I will not have a computer and the hotel charges for internet access anyway (something like $15 a day) plus, really, do you want me hanging out in the room blogging instead of out enjoying? I thought not~!

Alright off I go. I will have a fun saying up tomorrow, my scripture post on Sunday and then guests next week.

Miss me. Jules

OHHHH, I almost forgot! I am featured today at the Eclectic Element - not sure what I did to deserve that honor, but am thrilled just the same. Go see.

I Found a Lump, I need your help, Photo Project, and so much more. What a busy day!

I need your HELP!!!!!

I need your help. I will be out of town for almost a week.

I thought I would have time to get a few posts scheduled but it just not going to happen.
(yes, thank you H1N1 for screwing one more thing up)

Soooo.... I was wondering if anyone would want to "guest post" for me.

It can be a post from your archives - something forgotten by your readers, or something fabulously new.

Just drop me a line in the comment box or send your post via my email.

I would die of appreciation

(ok, not die, I really want to go on this trip.... but I would be thrilled!)

Fear

We normally let the photos do the speaking on this photo project but this week I am going to throw an explanation in:

I am going to be a ladybug for Halloween.

I am going out of town (vegas) so the costume is a bit skimpy....

Deb in her fabulous humor is making a fun joke about this.

Now for my pic.

I did find a lump yesterday while shopping for the exact bra you see in the picture.

I was able to get into the doctor right away due to a very strange cancellation.

She did see the lump I was seeing, but is not at all worried about it.

I will have it rechecked in two weeks to be sure.

In the mean time if you haven't had a chance to check out our other photo posts
