I definitely feel there is wisdom in that. You do your job well when they are little, when they are older you enjoy them very much. So important to put the work in to them in the early years. At least that's been my experience. I'm very lucky!

Since the birth of my daughter (now 12) nothing else matters to me in the world asides my children and their mother. They are everything. And I would agree entirely with the above quote.
