With it being the last week of school, and the teachers and kids having checked out.
It is field trip and awards week
Today was AR awards - reading awards for the third graders.
I was amazed to find out that my oldest received the highest award in third grade!
He read almost 2 million words, had almost 300 points
and reached the top certificate in his class.
(If you are not familiar with the program -
this is all very impressive for a third grader)

He told me that he reads so much because it is what he knows.
This makes sense since we have been reading to him since he was a sprout.
That got me thinking - I haven't been reading lately.
The book I had didn't catch my attention and
it hasn't turned hot enough to catch up
with Mma Ramotswe.
If I am to lead the others by example then
it is high time I get reading again.

Oohh...congratulations to the young lad! There is never enough importance put on reading in so many schools...so glad that his has put it on the forefront. Hope that book you're reading is a good one...at least it's a beautiful day to enjoy it!
I know you must be so proud of him! I think that is awesome. My soon to be third grader has already gone to the library to sign up for the summer reading program for next week. Yea for books :)
i was reading this afternoon too, out in the garden. it was heaven.
and we've got nearly a whole month left of school!

I was read to every night for years and years. Then i read to my parents. its a tradition i plan on keeping with my kids.

wow - I just made the mistake of blowing up the pic of me reading - avoid that mistake people, I look bug eyed and scary! ha! that is what happens when you have 10 seconds to run across the deck sit down , grab book in hand and look comfortable reading!

Congratulations to your son. It is really rewarding to see a child deeply engrossed in a book. And.. you don't look that scary! Lol
A very handsome lad! Reading is your window into many worlds. It educates you, it illuminates you, it opens doors that otherwise would remain closed. You are a very good mum indeed for reading to your children and opening the world to them.

There's nothing better than a good read outdoors! If you're looking for a good book to enjoy along with your children, I think Life of Pi by Yann Martel was fantastic. It's been a while since I read it but I'm pretty sure it's kid-friendly. I gave it to my sister for her 11th birthday, although it's not classified as a kiddie book.
What a handsome grandson I have. I am soooo proud of him. Also his sister, wee one #2. She reads alot also. I can't believe they are growing up so fast. I miss that little boy layiing in the bed with you reading to him. I know you are so very proud of him, so am I. Please tell him.
p.s. I also was one who read with a light under the covers!
